Decades of Dedication Reaps Rewards

Nigel Brown, Chairman of NW Brown Group Ltd, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) this year by the Anglia Polytechnic University (APU) in recognition of the years of dedicated professionalism he has committed to Cambridge and Anglian business ventures.

After 30 years in business in Cambridge it still came as quite a surprise to Mr Brown to receive the letter indicating the wish of the Anglia Polytechnic University to present him with an honorary degree. ‘Totally unexpected, but a lovely surprise. My staff especially have taken a light hearted approach by asking me to philosophise over any possible injuries or imagined illnesses!’ responds Nigel to questions of how he feels about the Doctorate of Philosophy presented to him by APU Vice Chancellor, Mike Malone-Lee.

Of course Nigel is a very deserving individual despite his own attempts to play down his achievements. Amongst other roles, Nigel is the Chairman of Greater Cambridge Partnership, a member of the University of Cambridge Finance Committee and Venture Capital Committee, a Trustee of the Cambridge Union Society, Chairman of the Cambridge University Technology Service (CUTS) and the Chairman of the Cambridge Arts Theatre. Nigel has supported many initiatives in the fields of music and the arts with financial and moral contributions (including the Nigel W Brown Music Prize for talented Cambridge University Student musicians) as well as creating unique syndicated sponsorships of valuable instruments for talented professional musicians. In 1999, in recognition of his experience in the development of the high-technology economy of Cambridge and its surrounding region, Nigel was appointed to be an adviser to the Singapore Government on early-stage VC funding.

Lord Lewis was also presented with an Honorary Doctorate from APU.
